Indie Dog Breed Guide: Indian Pariah Care, Coat and Lifespan
Short answer: the Indie, or Indian Pariah dog, is India’s own landrace dog: medium-sized, short-coated, alert and very hardy. Most Indies live around 13 to 15 years. Their coat is easy to keep: a weekly brush, a bath every 4 to 6 weeks, regular nail trims and a close watch for ticks. They rarely need a haircut, and they should never be shaved.
What is an Indie dog?
“Indie” is the friendly name for the Indian Pariah dog, sometimes called the desi dog. It isn’t a breed that someone designed. It’s one of the oldest dog types in the world, shaped over thousands of years by living alongside people across the subcontinent. Many of the dogs you see on Indian streets are Indies or Indie mixes, and more families now adopt them on purpose rather than buying a pedigree puppy. Kennel clubs mostly don’t register them, but that says nothing about the dog: Indies are a distinct, recognisable type.
Size, looks and coat
That coat suits Indian weather well. It dries quickly, doesn’t trap heat the way a thick double coat does, and doesn’t mat. Indies do shed, lightly most of the year and more heavily for a few weeks as the seasons change.
Temperament: what living with an Indie is like
Indies are intelligent, alert and independent. They bond strongly with their family and often make natural watchdogs, barking at anything unusual near the home. Because their ancestors survived on their wits, they learn quickly but get bored with repetitive training; short sessions with treats work better than long drills. Most need at least two good walks a day and something to do. An under-exercised Indie may dig, chew or bark. Adopted adult Indies can take weeks to settle and may be wary of being handled at first, which matters when it comes to grooming.
How to groom an Indie
- Brush once a week with a rubber grooming mitt or a soft bristle brush. During a seasonal shed, brush every two or three days to lift the loose hair before it ends up on your sofa.
- Bathe every 4 to 6 weeks, or when your dog is genuinely dirty. Use a mild dog shampoo, never a human one, and rinse thoroughly. Bathing much more often can dry out the skin.
- Trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks. Indies that walk mostly indoors or on soft ground don’t wear their nails down.
- Check and wipe the ears weekly. Upright ears stay fairly clean, but look for redness, dark wax or a bad smell.
- Check for ticks after every walk, especially around the ears, neck, armpits and between the toes.
Grooming a nervous or newly adopted Indie
Start with touch before tools. For a few days, handle the paws, ears and tail during calm moments and reward your dog with a treat. Let it sniff the brush and nail clippers. Keep the first sessions to a few minutes, stop before your dog gets stressed, and build up. If your Indie growls, freezes or tries to bite when handled, don’t force it: ask a vet or a qualified trainer for help, and tell the groomer before they start. Does an Indie need a haircut?
No. An Indie’s coat stays short on its own. A groomer may tidy the hair between the paw pads and around the bottom for hygiene, but a full haircut does nothing useful. Don’t shave an Indie in summer: the coat protects the skin from sunburn and insect bites, and short fur already keeps it cool. Shade, water and walks at cooler times of day do far more.
Indie health basics
Indies have a reputation as tough dogs, and many are, but they still need the same care as any pet. Every Indie needs core vaccinations, regular deworming and tick prevention, which your vet will plan by age. Dogs adopted from the street often arrive with skin problems such as mange, ear infections or ticks, so a vet check in the first week is worth it. Tick fever, spread by ticks, is common in India; a dog that’s suddenly tired, off its food or running a temperature needs a vet quickly. Sterilisation is usually recommended for adopted dogs; your vet can advise on timing.

How often should I bathe an Indie dog?
Every 4 to 6 weeks is enough for most Indies, or sooner if they get muddy. Use a mild dog shampoo and rinse well.
